While I don't claim to be a great grammarian, I do know a few things. As discussed before, I hate the misuse of apostrophes. (Evidently I'm not the only one!) Over the last week I have seen so many misuses that I want to scream. Therefore it is time for an apostrophe lesson!
Apostrophes are used to show possession like: Shannon's son Owen. It is not used to talk about a collective group of people like: the Piners. I have seen many people lately use an apostrophe to talk about their family, putting an apostrophe between the last letter of their name and the S. DON'T DO IT...IT IS NOT RIGHT!!
Ok sorry for that rant...it is just a pet peeve of mine!

whoa - you are serious about your punctuation! you must be a teacher.
I understand!! I also hate it when people leave out an apostrophe--as in, using "your" when they mean "You are".
Have you read the book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves"? I think you would enjoy it.
And congratulations-did I see that you won some fabric from Sew, Mama, Sew? SOOOOOOOOO Jealous!
I bet I am one of those people you are talking about. :) I am a lazy typer and when it comes to informal things I won't use right punctuation. Sorry! I will work on that! :)
Ha ha! Okay... I have a question for you... what if the last name ends in an 's'? I know I should know what to do in this case but I never remember. Shouldn't you just add the apostrophe after the 's' and not add another 's' (when it is possessive as you were speaking of)? Like Bass', not Bass's?
