Another first

Yesterday Owen turned 4 weeks old! At 4 weeks, breastfed babies can be introduced to a bottle. Over the last few weeks, I have been trying to pump in between his feedings so that I would have a supply in the freezer. While I love that I am able to breastfeed, I do want the ability to be away from him more than 2-3 hours at a time.

Below is first experience with a bottle. Jeremy fed him and he did a great job! We did have to change bottles in the middle because he didn't seem to be getting a lot out of the first one. Overall, it went really well! While I will continue to breastfeed, it will be nice for Jeremy or the grandparents to feed him every once in a while.

One thing, on the other hand, is not going well...his sleeping pattern. His typical schedule used be: feed every 2-3 hours, stay awake for a little while, then nap afterwards. Lately his schedule has been out of whack. He doesn't want to go back to sleep after is 4/5 am feeding. So we get up and feed and then we go back to sleep on the couch with him in my arms until about 9. Then he eats again and then stays awake until lunch time. Because he is awake all morning, he has been sleeping most of the afternoon and then will have a wake period after dinner.

After his dinner feeding, we have been trying to put him in his crib to start his night sleep. He goes down fine at that time but that's where it ends. He'll eat again around 9 or 10 and it sometimes takes 45 mins. to get him back to sleep. He whimpers, squirms, and wants to suck on Jeremy's finger (he won't take a pacifier). He does the same thing at his 1 and 4 am feedings. Poor Jeremy tried to coax him back to sleep for almost 2 hours last night. He was not a happy camper!

Anybody have any suggestions on how to help him go down more easily? How can I start establishing a regular schedule as well ? Moms out there help me out.

Shannon, I cannot believe he's already 4 weeks ago! It doesn't seem like that much time has passed!

He is so sweet, Shannon! Have you tried swaddling him real tight before bedtime?

Happy Birthday little man! My first suggestion is letting Babywise become your best friend. Molly turned 1 month on Sunday and is sleeping 4-5 hrs at a time every night and waking up for only 1 feeding. We started using the book around 2 weeks and its finally starting to prove itself. We swaddle her really tight too and use a fan for a white nose type of effect and/or a sound machine with soothing background noise. I'm so proud of how great your doing. Your a natural mommy thats for sure :)

At about 4 weeks Connor slept in his crib - and not all that well. We started to swaddle him real tight with a swaddle blanket and use a noise machine like everyone else said. It's been 4 weeks since then, and he now sleeps from 10pm until about 4, 5, or 6 without waking up! Just hang in there.

I agree with the other suggestions as well. Babywise is an excellent book for advice and starting schedules early. We also used that with Jackson and it really helped me get him on a schedule early, and just adjust the schedule as he got older and his needs changed. Good luck! You're doing such a great job!

i was going to suggest swaddling tightly, but looks like you already heard that one! We also used a fan and a noise machine for white noise. Katie slept in her crib from day/night one. I have heard that formula stays with babies longer (takes longer to digest). I know you may not want to do that, but I've had friends that used it just at night to get the baby into a routine of sleeping thru the night and not becoming a "night-feeder"
Good luck!
